Hunt-Lenox Globe

The Hunt-Lenox Globe or Lenox Globe, dating from ca. 1510,〔(【引用サイトリンク】 url = http://exhibitions.nypl.org/treasures/items/show/163 )〕 is the second or third oldest known terrestrial globe, after the Erdapfel of 1492. It is housed by the Rare Book Division of the New York Public Library.
It is notable as one of only two known instances of a historical map actually using the phrase ''HC SVNT DRACONES'' (in Latin ''hic sunt dracones'' means "here are dragons".)
== Description ==

The Lenox Globe is a hollow copper globe that measures in diameter and in circumference. It is two parts, joined at the equator and held together by a wire strung through holes at the poles.
It bears a striking resemblance to the Globus Jagellonicus, also tentatively dated to 1510.
The phrase ''HIC SVNT DRACONES'' appears on the eastern coast of Asia.〔 This is a reference to the Kingdom of Dragoian on the island of Sumatra described by Marco Polo in his Travels (''De Regionibus Orientalis''), Book Three, Chapter XVII, "De Regno Dragoiam".〔(Simon Grynaeus & Johannes Huttichius, ''Novus Orbis Regionum ac Insularum Veteribus Incognitarum,'' Basel & Paris, 1532, p.402. )〕 George Phillips noted: “Dragoian has puzzled many commentators, but on (a) Chinese chart in the Wubei Zhi 武 備 誌 ("Military Records"), there is a country called ''Tahuamien'' 大 花 面 , meaning "country of the tattooed faces", which in the Amoy dialect is pronounced ''Dakolien'', in which it is very easy to recognise the Dragoian,or Dagoyam, of Marco Polo”.〔George Phillips, “Ma Huan’s Account of the Kingdom of Bengal”, ''Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain & Ireland,'' July 1895, p.528, (on page 10418 of the ''Wubei Zhi'' ); cited in Sir Henry Yule and Henri Cordier, ''The Travels of Marco Polo,'' (1920), Vol. II, p.297.〕
